A BRIEF HISTORY
The Pilea Peperomioides originates from China where a Norwegian missionary found it and brought it to Norway in 1946. He subsequently traveled widely in Norway and often gave basal shoots of the plant to friends. In this way the Chinese Money Plant was effectively distributed around Norway where it is now widespread as a windowsill plant and where it is known as 'the Missionary Plant'.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
LIGHT
Light-wise, the best situation for your Chinese money plant is bright light, with no direct sunlight. Direct sun scorches leaves, and light shade may encourage larger leaves. They're said to be hardy down to freezing, and a period of cool temperatures may make them more likely to produce their tiny white flowers on pink stems. To keep your Chinese money plant nicely shaped, rotate it at least once a week to prevent it from getting lopsided.
WATERING
The Chinese money plant prefers a well-draining potting soil, and a pot with drainage holes is necessary. The soil needs to mostly dry out between waterings, with more watering required in warmer, sunnier weather. If the leaves start to look slightly droopy, that's a sign that the plant needs water.
CLEANING
The large leaves of the Chinese Money Plant tend to accumulate dust, so these Pile Peperomioides benefit from regular showers, or at least wiping down of their leaves.
FEEDING
Treat your Chinese Money Plant monthly with an all-purpose 16-16-16 plant fertilizer during the spring and summer growing seasons. The Plant Provocateur highly recommends MAXSEA Seaweed Brand Plant Food due to its blend of concentrated micro-nutrients which is water soluble and will work immediately.
