Ah yes, the common Canna Lily or Canna. They're like that crazy relative of the plant world who wears caftans, too much rouge, and garish lipstick. Think the Mrs. Roper of plants. Well most of the time I don't pay much mind to the Canna but on a few rare occasions there are a few that catch my eye. One that gets me going is really like a dandy of sorts...Canna 'Black Knight'. The foliage of this grows-almost-anywhere-rhizomatous-rooted plant is big, bold and tropical. In the case of Canna 'Black Knight' the foliage is deep deep burgundy almost black. However, it's real attraction is its inflorescence that unfurl into brilliantly red bloused folds of flowers. You can't really tell where the petals begin and end. There's something about its composure that makes this Canna stand out as one of the few that don't come off too gaudy.
My actual favorite part of the show that Canna 'Black Knight' puts on is when the flowers have come and gone leaving behind crazy looking space-age bulbous fruit. I've cut stems with these on them and added them to cut flower compositions to shake things up. They add something different to the mix and amp up the 'coolness' factor.
