ONE DAY ONLY! Tomorrow, Saturday August 10th from 11am -6pm The Plant Provocateur brings you the Carnivorous Plant Carnival! For one day only, I’ll be offering up some of the strangest plants you’ll ever meet. There will be Insect Eating… Venus Flytraps (Dionaea muscipula ‘King Henry’ one of the largest trap growers around), North American Pitcher Plants (Sarracenia, which some refer to as Cobra Lily, although it is not a true Cobra Lily), Tropical Pitcher Plants (Nepenthes), and Drosera (Sundew) for the offering.

Prices will vary as there will be rare, unusual, hard to find, one of a kind (hybrids) on hand. I’ve amassed a small collection for both the curious and the collector. I will be on hand to explain what you can expect from your plant and how to care for it. If you’re interested in growing something a bit alien and fantastical, drop on by and check them out. Plants are strictly first come first serve. Shop hours will be 11am-6pm. Hope to see you!

The time has come…The Plant Provocateur will be holding an Outdoor Plant Safari Sale at The Plant Provocateur shop this weekend Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd. It’s time to purge The Plant Provocateur Botanical Garden’s grounds and greenhouse. Time to share some plant treasures with the world in order to make room for a new batch of horticultural hotness! This has become the annual event where, for a rare moment, I offer up some of my collection of outdoor living plants.

Clockwise from Top Left: Chonemorpha fragrans ‘Frangipani Vine’, Brilliantaisia owariensis ‘Tropical Giant Salvia’, Cobaea scandens ‘Cup and Saucer Vine’, and Berkheya purpurea ‘African Thistle’

Curious, mysterious, chic, unique plants, some of which you may have never seen before, will be up for the offering. Flowering vines such as Chonemorpha fragrans ‘Frangipani Vine” from India with its big, pleated tropical leaves and dreamy scented flowers. Canarina canariensis ‘Canary Island Bell Flower Vine from the Canary Islands that produces startling orange lantern-like flowers, actively grows, blooms, dies down, then starts the whole cycle over again. Solanum wendlandii ‘Costa Rican Night Shade’, one of the largest in the Potato Vine family, produces large tropical blue parachute-like flowers and dense coverage on whatever it climbs on. Cobaea scandens ‘Mexican Cup and Saucer vine from Mexico, produces plump white flowers that age to deep purple and resemble a cup and saucer. Selenicereus anthonyanus ‘Fish Bone’ cactus with its quirky fish bone-like foliage that produces spectacular bicolor flowers.

Some other rarities include Lobelia tupa ‘Devil’s Tobacco from Chile with its tall spikes of deep red pipe-like flowers. Brilliantaisia ‘Tropical Giant Salvia from Africa that prefers a bright shady spot and will reward you with 4 to 6 foot tall spikes topped with blue and white flowers that remind me of swans swimming. Another cool plant from Africa in the offering is Berkheya purpurea ‘African Thistle’. Imagine if a thistle and a sunflower had a baby and it’s flowers were a smoky purple sunflower looking thing! Very unique and different!

Some of the plants offered have been grown from seed, cuttings, or collected from The Huntington Botanical Gardens and other California plant sales. There will also be unique succulents, bromeliads, heirloom tomato plants, and other treasures on hand. Plants come in 4”, 1 gallon, and 5 gallon sizes. Some plants are starters and others are specimens. So, if you’re up for adding a little something chic and unique to your outdoor garden come by and check it out. All plants are first come, first serve, no exceptions.

TPP Limited Edition Outdoor Plant Sale This Weekend!

The Plant Provocateur Limited Edition Outdoor Plant Sale, this weekend, in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.  The Plant Provocateur supplying Silver Lake, Echo Park, Atwater Village, Los Feliz, and DTLA.

Now here's a little something to get excited about!  This weekend I'll be having a one off Limited Edition Outdoor Plant Sale of select plants from The Plant Provocateur Botanical Garden.  If you're looking for something that you don't normally find at your local plant nursery, you might want to check this out.  I've got some unique outdoor curiosities for you.  Selection is limited and it's first come, first served.

Solanum wendlandii.  'Costa Rican Night Shade' or 'Giant Potato Vine'

Solanum wendlandii.png

This is a semi-evergreen vine that can grow 15-20 feet in length and width.  Gives a great semi-tropical look to any garden.  It's a great vine for those seeking a semi-secure barrier along a wall.  This vine has stems covered with thorns, that it uses to secure itself to surfaces and climb.  It has lush, big leafed foliage, compared to other potato vines, and it produces up to 2 inch wide purple-blue flowers that slowly fade to lavender.  Solanum wendlandii likes full sun, regular water, and well-draining soil. It's a fairly fast grower.  I have them in 5gal containers. $15.

Next Up: Strobilanthes gossypinus 'Persian Shield'

Strobilanthes gossypunis.png

Now for real plant freaks out there...this is a real find.  Strobilanthes gossypinus is rarely available tropical shrub.  It's texture and color contrast are captivating.  First, the foliage feels like lusciously soft cottony velvet.  The foliage has a silver base color covered by gorgeously soft goldenish white hairs, giving it a regally luxurious vibe. Note: image was taken at sunset so it's super golden.  In most cases it's a soft white gold color.  Such a gorgeous plant.  I propagated these from a plant I got from superstar Landscape Designer, plant hunter, and talented potter Dustin Gimbel.  These shrubs can grow 3-4 feet tall and wide.  They like part sun/part shade conditions and regular water. 4" Plants. $10.

Next up: Aloe plicatilis 'Fan Aloe'

Aloeplicatilis.png

Such a cool aloe. The foliage is to die for with its fan-like geometry.  These drought-tolerant succulents make quite the statement in the garden.  Their form is everything!  They produce beautiful sherbet orange flower spikes and grow into a shrub consisting of many 'fans'.  A bit slow growing, but always super sculptural.  They like full sun and low water.  4" Plants $10. (Actually 1 gallon size - they're Big!)

And finally, a truly beautiful vine, Stephanotis floribunda. 'Madagascar Jasmine'

Stephenotis floribunda.png

I'm super excited to offer what I think is one of the most lovely vines in the world.  Stephanotis floribunda is a rope-like vine that produces beautiful white trumpet flowers with a most beautiful fragrance.  You may have seen the flowers used in a wedding bouquet or boutonniere.  They're also used in Hawaiian leis.  I first discovered this vine while vacationing on Kauai some years ago.  The fragrance got me!  I can only describe it as heavenly.  Now you too, can grow your own!  I've grown this vine for the last few years and collected seed from it.  From those seeds, I offer you your very own Madagascar Jasmine 'Baby' Vine in 4" pots.  These vines like part sun/ part shade and regular water. $5.
