Is it making you crazy? What am I talking about you say? I'm talking about the tantalizing tingle one feels when witnessing the botanical beauty of Ixora coccinea otherwise known as Scarlet Jungle Flame. Open your heart to its flaming desire. I stumbled upon this sumptuous siren while on a plant safari the other day in the wilds of Hollywood. I thought to myself "Scarlet" where have you been all of my life?
Well, turns out Ixora (say it with me, Iks-OR-uh) comes to us from Southern India and Sri Lanka. So for those of you in warmer sub-tropical climes Ixora coccinea will grow beautifully outdoors. As for many of us, this plant would be a really cool annual or houseplant perhaps. It grows into a glamorously glossy rounded shrub that blooms almost all year round. It likes full sun but actually does best with part shade. As for the flowers, the butterflies go absolutely bananas for them. So, if you're interested in trying your hand at something exotically enticing find it, grow it, and let it transport you to the jungles of Sri Lanka.
